Today I’m sharing how to make a Butterfly Quilt.
I’ve made several of them and a ton of people have ask me how I made it … so I decided to film the video.
Here’s some details:
- Butterfly Quilt measures 68 x 70.
- Quilt is 7 Blocks across and 8 Blocks Down … for a total of 56 Blocks.
- I used two Layer Cakes – Layer Cakes are Pre-cut fabric squares that measure 10 x 10 … you get 40 in a pack (you need a total of 56 for this quilt).
- I used two Charm Packs – Charm Packs are 5″ Square of fabric (Butterfly fabric … only cut out 56).
- This quilt needs 4-3/4 yards of backing fabric &1/2 yard of binding fabric.
- AccuQuilt Cutting System with Critters Die (Butterfly)
- Once my quilt top is finished I take it along with my backing fabric and binding fabric to a longarm quilter.
The picture below is the Quilt Top I made during the filming of the video. I’ll be taking it to my longarm quilter later this week.

The Verna Charm Packs came from my stash of fabric (not sure how long I’ve had them).
Here’s a close up picture of the Raw Edges Butterfly (after the quilt has been taken to long arm quilter and then washed).

You are welcome to use yards of fabric … I use Pre-Cut Fabric to eliminate stress on my shoulder and neck. To figure out how much fabric is needed …. you will need to determine how many 10″ blocks you can get out of a yard of fabric. As for the butterflies …. eight fat quarters is plenty (depends on size of fat quarter …. some places cut them smaller than others).
I’ll see you tomorrow with Box of the Week 3!

Love your quilt Angie! I am also in the process of sewing my second quilt. Does your quilter do the binding as well? I just had my first quilt quilted but she does not do the binding so now I have to make some time to cut my strips and sew my binding! Not sure when I will get to that. I am just curious what all long arm quilters do in different parts of the country.
Hi Georgia, I am very lucky that my longarm quilter does the binding as well. If she didn’t …. I’m not sure my quilts would ever get done.
Love it Angie. It is so delicate looking. And we know how much you love to sew. So keep sharing your quilt projects with us.
Love the quilt, would be perfect for a little girls room, thank you for sharing all your tips and tricks too.
It’s so pretty, hope I get the time to make one. Thank you so much for sharing.
Beautiful!!!
That’s so pretty. I have the retired flower die and have made up a few practice squares to see what kind of foundation fabric I want to use. It’s super fun and so easy! I’m like you and don’t want to diddle with piecing tiny triangles or whatever and putting together a complicated puzzle/patch.
Love your projects as always. I came in late to the live stream so looking forward to watching later. Can’t wait to play with new products when I get home. More fun stuff to order soon!
