Double Slice Layer Cake Quilt Along with Chic n  Scratch, Stampin’ Up! Demonstrator Angie Juda

Supply List

  • One Layer Cake
  • Matching Thread
  • 4-1/2 Yards of backing fabric
  • 1/2 Yard of Binding Fabric
  • Batting if your longarm quilter does not provide it.
  • Rotary Cutter
  • Ruler Grid
  • Seam Ripper (for just in case)
  • Sewing Machine
  • 1/4 Foot with Guide
  • Cutting Mat
  • Iron and ironing board or pad

Quilt Top measures: 54″ x 63″

If you do not have a long arm quilter to finish your quilt …. please call or visit your local fabric store and ask them. They usually will have several business cards of local ladies that offer long arm quilting.

Video #1 – Supplies

Video 2

  • The Layer Cake Squares measure 10 x 10.  Make your first cut at 3-1/2″.
  • That gives you one piece that measures 3-1/2 x 10 and the other is 6-1/2 x 10.
  • Make sure you keep your stacks lined up (very important).

Video 3

  • Start with the bottom piece of fabric from the 3-1/2 x 10 stack and place it right sides together with the first piece of fabric from the 6-1/2 x 10 stack of fabric and sew a 1/4″.
  • Repeat for the remaining strips ….. chain sewing is a great option.

Video 4

  • Snip the threads … separating your chain stitching.
  • Press the seams

Video 5

  • Cut your block at 5″ and keep them stacked in two stacks.

Video 6 

  • You have two stacks of fabric … turn one stack over and pull the last piece place it right sides together to the first piece from the other stack.
  • Sew them together with a 1/4 seam.

Video 7 

  • Press your seams.
  • Square up your blocks.

Video 8  

  • Recap on how to square up your blocks.
  • Place fabric on Design Wall (6 blocks across and 7 blocks down).
  • Connect blocks – alternating the direction of the fabric.  Alternate rows as well.
  • Pin Blocks and sew them together at 1/4 seam.

Video 9

  • I place my fabric on a Design Wall to make sure it will look good.
  • Start with row one and pin blocks together and sew.
  • I pin and sew one row at a time.

Video 10

  • Snip extra threads.
  • Check for holes.
  • Measure for Backing and Binding Fabric using the Quilters Little Helper app by Robert Kaufman.
  • Iron and use Starch.
  • Take it to a long arm quilter (with backing fabric and binding fabric).

    • Hi Jackie, I take mine to a local longarm quilter and she does it for me. I hope to be quilting them myself sometime this year … I’m saving my money to buy a midarm machine!

  2. I am close to the end. I am now working on the rows. I keep moving pieces maybe second questioning myself. I will post a picture when it is finished. Thank you Angie for the step by step video. It has been so helpful. I had been away from sewing for awhile and this has been a great project to bring me back into sewing again. Love how you make this look so easy. Looking forward to finishing this project and moving on to the next.
